The Abracadabra Scarf (#472)

Mirror, Mirror Scarf.
This is a delightful piece of knitting; the scarf is very easy to knit once you have familiarised yourself with the technique of double-knitting (a detailed description is included in the pattern). Larger-than-usual needles are used, allowing the yarn to go much further than expected; this makes it an ideal project for those odd balls of crazy yarn you just had to buy. WARNING: This pattern is addictive knitting: with the current explosion of exotic and fancy yarns, it is very difficult to stop after just one scarf!
Yarn: You will need two yarns of very different texture, sport/DK weight or heavier. A small scarf can be made with 80+ m/yds of each yarn; for a longer scarf, allow more yarn.
Suggested combinations:
Noro Kureyon (50g=100m) and Salsa Colour (50g=90m),
Furore (50g=82m) and Cometa (25g=50m),
Noro Kureyon (50g=100m) and High Touch (50g=45m)
Techniques: true double knitting.

Faroese Flower Shawl.
A graceful, shoulder-hugging Faroese-style shawl, knit in one piece from the neck down. Features floral lace stitches and an unusual petal trim at the bottom.
Yarn Fingering-weight soft wool, DK /sport yarns, fine mohair blends, alpaca.
Techniques - lace patterning, optional knitted-in edge beading

The Emperor's New Scarf
An unusual technique for incorporating fresh air in your knitting gives a scarf with sinuous fish tail/ tree root ends. Knit sideways, very easy knitting with some crochet chain finishing required.

Yarn - ideal for DK /sport yarns with a little loft. The original pictured was worked with one skein of Kimmet Croft 60 /40% wool /angora (see Other ports of call ). A little contrast yarn will be needed to highlight the holes!
Techniques - Cast -off cast on, waste yarn openings (Both illustrated).
Beginner/intermediate.

Falling Leaves Scarf
A sophisticated reversible scarf revealing an interlocking leaf pattern on one side with architectural ogees on the other. Pattern includes variations including adjustable width and Ascot styles. Adapts to fit the available quantity of yarn, no finishing required. May be worked as a quick and easy project with larger needles or a more detailed event when worked with more repeats in a fine yarn.
Size - Any
Yarn - Suitable for any weight of yarn, for maximum effect choose a light color, solid yarn or a subtle hand dyed yarn.

Fir Tree Shawl
A spectacular cozy wrap, fir trees and sunsets. Easier than it looks. All rows are right-side facing, no ends to darn. Two colors per row. There are a mouth-watering 27 different hand-dyed shades in all. An excellent stranded knitting project for those new to this technique.
Note that Kit shawl is one tree deeper than pictured.

Maple Leaf Shawl
A versatile lace pattern with Maple Leaf motifs, adaptable to many yarn weights from cobweb on up. Size may be tailored to suit the available yarn. Shapes: either square or zigzag-edged ( with a 3/4 version of either, an option ) ! Worked in the round from the center out, or the 3/4 version is worked back and forth to give a shoulder-hugging shawl. The pattern is both charted and written row by row. Little finishing needed, but requires blocking.

A tassel-trimmed garter-stitch shawl, shaped with short rows to give a radiating pattern. Poinsettia Shawl
Based on traditional counterpane squares, an impressive and cloud-soft piece of knitting. Easier than it looks. Worked on 6mm / US 10 needles. This shawl has been exhibited in the Museum for Textiles, Toronto. It is assembled from four squares with a lace edging, all joined with a simple netting stitch. The pattern is charted and written row by row.
Size - 1.24m sq.
Yarn - mohair yarns; fine fuzzy yarn yields a light shawl; heavier weights yield an afghan

Cloud Scarf
